In a secluded Breede Valley sanctum, a lone monk hunches over his bench, cackling quietly to himself. Devotion to the lost art of alchemy can drive a man mad, but Brother Nicholas remains stoic in his pursuit of a fresh miracle.

Oh, the things he’s seen, concocting and conjuring and staring into the void, all in the name of unearthing the supernatural, the curious and the sublime…

It’s an obsession that has given life to MONKS Mysterium, Mary Jane and Medella – batch distilled with infusions of handpicked mountain flora paired with glacier-clear water, they’re a taste of the decidedly divine.

MYSTERIUM

Shrouded in secrecy, enrobed in the ethereal and infused with an elixir of fynbos and sceletium, it’s a taste of the utterly miraculous.

On the nose, sweet melon and caramel aromas start the journey with undertones of orange peel and herbs. Mysterium offers a drier, warm mouth finish with hints of juniper, buchu and citrus.

Infused with a brew of blueberries, it’s a taste of the absolutely inexplicable.

Miraculous Medella boasts blueberries farmed and handpicked on location. It’s wonderfully whimsical – light and crisp on the nose with spicy notes of African Ginger which enhance the deliciously distinctive berry flavour.

THE MONKS STORY

For over a decade, Nic and Di Davis have shared a farm with fifth generation Breede Valley wine farmers, Coenie and Edelgard Lategan. In late 2017 the friends decided to bring their vast and varied skills and experience to the realm of independent gin distilling.

Driven by their love of their picturesque valley and their passion for African botanicals, Nic and Di began the MONKS journey by building South Africa’s first off-grid distillery late in 2018. Inspired by 11th century Benedictine monks, who were the first to distil in copper alembic pot stills, the couple have woven history and authenticity into the design and production of their premium elixirs.

Home to a range of endemic botanicals and fed by crystal-clear mountain water, the farm is where the alchemy of gin happens. It is here where they turn simple into sublime and base into bliss. It’s an obsession that has seen the MONKS gins being praised and awarded both locally and internationally and means that every sip is a taste of the truly miraculous.
